Mercedes-Benz’s ‘V-ision’ of the environmentally-compatible MPV
Mere weeks after the new Mercedes-Benz V-Class was launched in the UK, Mercedes-Benz has revealed a design study of how the new model could be a game-changing vehicle in the fiercely-contested MPV sector.
By combining the new V-Class with its latest PLUG-IN HYBRID technology, Mercedes-Benz has created the Concept V-ision e – a vehicle that blends environmentally-friendly high performance with the lightness of modern luxury and which demonstrates the potential of Mercedes-Benz MPVs.
Advanced Electric Motor; effective efficiency for acceleration and energy recovery
The Concept V-ision e takes its advanced drivetrain from the latest C-Class HYBRID model, benefiting from a 210hp four-cylinder petrol engine twinned with a 90kW electric motor. Together, they provide 333hp and torque of 600Nm – allowing it to sprint from 0-62mph in just 6.1 seconds but also consuming less than three litres of fuel per 100km and emitting only 71g/km CO2.
Energy for the advanced electric motor is stored in a high-voltage, 13.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be conveniently recharged using an external power source. It’s ease of recharging means it makes a very effective contribution to the efficiency of the Concept V-ision e and gives the model the capability to offer emissions-free driving of circa 30 miles in all electric mode – ideal if the vehicle is only used locally for short trips to work or in-town business transfers.
There’s no need for the driver to think about what combination of drivetrain to use either – the technology within the Concept V-ision e automatically selecting the ideal blend of combustion engine and electric motor. The available options include a whisper quiet silent electrical start (silent start), use of the electric motor to support the petrol engine during acceleration (boost) and energy recovery (recuperation) during braking and when the vehicle is coasting. The recovered energy is stored in the battery and can be used for all-electric driving or when the boost function is deployed. Should drivers wish they can select the level of hybrid interaction manually and at the flick of a switch, choosing from four different modes – Hybrid, E-mode, E-Save and Charge?
The extraordinary fusion of efficiency and performance is underlined by the concept’s stylish exterior. Sporting design titanium abeam paint, athletic body styling set off by 20-inch alloy wheels and a high-tech, two-part panoramic sliding sunroof that spans nearly its full length, the Concept V-ision e leaves its admirers in no doubt that it is something special.
Luxury, convenience-enhancing features that modern life requires
Inside, the Concept V-ision e continues its highly detailed theme, combining luxury with the convenience-enhancing features that modern life requires. Its feel has been designed to resemble that of a contemporary, luxurious loft environment – the sunroof drenching the interior with light and offering an open, spacious atmosphere. With its MAGIC SKY CONTROL the darkness of the sunroof can be quickly altered if passengers wish to alter the amount of outside light into the cabin.
A striking English dark walnut floor contrasts with white Nappa leather trim and innovative touches include iPad holders with integrated charging interface and two USB charging points, two folding tables plus a centre console that houses myriad stowage compartments, power sockets, a five-litre cooler and both USB ports and an SD card slot. The rear Executive seats can be reclined at the touch of a button and even offer a three-stage heating and ventilation system with a relaxing massage feature. As there is so much space available, the impressive Executive seats can be combined with standard individual seats or optional seat benches.
Through the extensive specification of the Concept V-ision e, Mercedes-Benz is making it clear that its future MPVs will be even more versatile in meeting the needs of an increasingly varied spectrum of customers. Regardless of whether its role is as a family vehicle, a base for lifestyle and leisure activity enthusiasts or as a luxury business vehicle, the Concept V-ision e shows how such a vehicle can be personalised to suit – all the time offering the highest level of comfort and both performance and economy from an ultra-modern drive system.
