Hertfordshire Golfers Prepare for UK Final at St Andrews
Customers of Mercedes-Benz of Hertford and its sister site in Bishop’s Stortford will be enjoying driving of a different kind when they fly up to Scotland this week to take part in the UK Final of the largest amateur golfing tournament series in the world.
Phil Embleton, Richard Fletcher and Paul Whitnell will spend four nights north of the border whilst competing in the MercedesTrophy event, which takes place at St Andrews – the home of golf.
Representing Mercedes-Benz Hertfordshire, they will play three rounds of golf and be treated to the finest hospitality by the motor manufacturer, including accommodation at the famous Old Course Hotel and a gala prize-giving dinner at Glamis Castle.
The trio’s participation in the competition began in June when they won their respective handicap sections at Mercedes-Benz Hertfordshire’s own golf day at Brocket Hall. They then came through a MercedesTrophy national final qualifier at St George’s Hill Golf Club in Surrey against teams representing other Mercedes-Benz Retailers around the country to reach St Andrews.
“I finished second at Brocket Hall but played with no pressure as I thought it was just a game of golf and lunch but didn’t realise the day was part of such a huge tournament,” said Mr Whitnell, a company director for a Bishop’s Stortord-based freight forwarding business, who plays off 19 and is a member at the Manor of Groves Golf Club in Sawbridgeworth,
“I’ve never been to St Andrews before and the itinerary looks amazing, so this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and one that I’m really looking forward to.”
Now in its 26th year, the MercedesTrophy is contested by 65,000 golfers from 60 countries. The climax of the competition is a World Final, which will be held in Germany in September 2016.
